In Arkansas, husbands can beat their wives. But only once a month

And 5 other stupid laws from Arkansas.

  1. In Arkansas a law exists from the 1800s that states a husband is allowed to beat his wife, but only once a month. Funnily enough, the first question that comes to mind is not why men are allowed to beat their wives? It was 200 years ago and things were just different then or something. The immediate question is why in Gods name is it only once a month? Did they have a specific date in mind? I wonder if there is a wife beating calendar out there somewhere that goes with this law.
  2. In Virginia, it is illegal for a man to kick a woman out of bed. Is shoving allowed? It begs the question, if it is a literal interpretation they were going for or a general? What about a good butt shove, is that ok? Or can a man simply never force a woman out of bed? Wait… Can women still kick men out of bed?
  3. In Saudi Arabia it is illegal for women to vote or drive a car. This one is not so much interesting but sad. And yes, there is no excuse for such behavior. But Since half the population isn’t driving, how’s the traffic over in Saudi Arabia? And sure, it’s wrong that women can’t vote, but let’s be honest, in Saudi Arabia the men’s vote doesn’t really count much either.
  4. In India, in case of long standing debt a man can offer his wife until the debt is paid. Not sure how exactly this can work. There comes a time in every man’s marriage when he would gladly fall into debt in order to get rid of his old lady. And where then is the incentive to pay the debt back? This would work better the other way around though. Whenever a man cannot provide enough for the family, he is sent off to pay it somewhere else, leaving the family with one less mouth to feed.
  5. In Hong Kong, a wife is allowed to kill her husband if she catches him cheating. But she has to do it with her bare hands. This goes on the list of best laws ever put to paper. Once again, the first question that comes to mind is not why kill the husband? That’s a no brainer. But restricting the use of weapons makes it fascinating. Perhaps they assume that if a woman is really pissed, she doesn’t need any help. Not the craziest notion in the world.
